Datavyu running on PC help!

Hi everyone!

I am doing an experiment into preferential looking and am using a combination of a CCTV network running on PC/monitor (to record and store the footage) and datavyu to code the different directions of looking.

The CCTV soft/hardware only works on PC, so it looks like It will be easier to run datavyu on the same PC too.

My question is: does datavyu run without problems on PC? Does anyone have experience using the programme on PC as opposed to mac?

I have managed download datavyu to the PC and to import video files in .mp4 via VLC media player but the footage (which plays fine in the timeline) is somewhat choppy/blank when paused or stopped or moving frame by frame.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or any ways to improve the performance of datavyu on this PC?

Thanks so much, any advice would be appreciated ASAP!

Will not load a MP4 Video

I can't get mp4 videos to work.

I am on a windows 10 PC, using quicktime, but the file is an mp4. I am using the most recent version of Datavyu as I downloaded it last night.

I can't get the file I want to load when I go to "add" data. I have tried more than one mp4 file. It says "Could not open data source: Could not initialize class quicktime.io.QTfile.

The file plays on my quick time viewer on my computer.

Do I need to convert them to .mov or is there a work around?

Thank you!

Install for all users

I like to install Datavyu v1.3.4 for all user on the local computer. Computer is running Windows 7. The install program direct the installation to the users "AppData\local\Datavyu"

This means that Datavyu has to be installed for every user logging into the PC. This becomes a challenge for may users.

Do you have a work around that will install Datavyu into possibly the program folder and there by give access to all local users on the PC or something to this effect?

Thanks for your consideration.

What are settings that have been found to optimize video playback in Datavyu?

tabbing through codes

Is there a shortcut that allows you to go from the last code of one cell to the first code of the next cell?

We have preset cells with specific intervals and I have found that none of the shortcuts I have tried so far allow me to do this. If I use "tab", it takes me through all the codes within a given cell and only within that cell, and when I use the down arrow key, it takes me to the corresponding code in the next cell (e.g., from the last code of one cell to the last code of another cell).

Best Way To Export

I am not a programmer, I working with a version I downloaded 2 days ago, I am on windows 10, using quick time

What is the simplest way to export files? Do I have to learn how to program Ruby code?

And is there a nice way to compile multiple datasheets after you export them or export them together? This may be a different question. Mostly I am trying to export things.

Choppy playback, interlacing, & disconnect between playback timer & video

I currently use Datavyu 1.3.4 (Windows 10). The videos used are originally .mpg files. They were converted into .mp4 files using Datavyu's built-in converter. I use the QuickTime plugin.

However, the .mp4 videos play much better in QuickTime than in Datavyu. The diminished quality is especially noticeable because I resize the videos to fit the entire screen while coding. The videos move choppily and have interlacing. In addition, they take some time to completely load because I enlarged them. Thus, there is a disconnect between the playback timer and the actual video.

To what extent will choppy playback, interlacing that conversion caused, and a disconnect between the timer and the video negatively affect my coding?

Pattern-based validation of column/code

Greetings,

We'll be utilizing the checkValidCodes function for validating most of the codes in our columns.

I'm wondering if it's also possible to do pattern-based validation using regular expressions? For example, suppose I'd like to ensure that every value in a particular column/code ends with a particular punctuation mark (e.g., /\.\!\?$/).

If you have any example ruby scripts that we could use as a template for this type of validation, we'd be most grateful!

video and coded data (on and offset) no more synchronized

Dear Datavyu support In our research team, we have been trying to code our data with datavyu and ran into some problems. We use Mac OS X 10.9.5 and Videos in .mp4-Format (around 100-150 MB) that we recoded with HandBreak (from .mpg) as suggested on your website. The problem is, that when we are coding a video sequence (with the "snap region"-function) and then want to go back to an earlier sequence in the same video and double check the already coded data, the on- and offset times are no longer correct. That is, the times in the data sheet are still the same (we verified with a screenshot), but it seems like the video is no longer synchronized with the already coded data. This happens even if we don't close the video in between. Do you have an idea what could be causing this inconsistency? many thanks for your help

Hello, I am currently using both a mac and a PC to run quicktime. I downloaded the stable version of datavyu (v.1.2.2) on both computers. My mac is running Yosemite 10.10.3 and has 10.4 version of quicktime and version 1.6.0_65. The PC has quicktime 7.79 and java 7u73 jre1.8.0_71. The mac will not allow me to upload any videos of any format (.mov, mpg, mp4). The error message says "could not open data source: Non- Java exception raised, not handled! (Original problem:***-{__NSArrayM objectAtIndex:]:index 0 beyond bounds for empty array) . The PC will download datavyu, but will not allow me to update java as it requests. I am currently wiping the PC. Thank you.

Quicktime's Java libraries are not found

I am planning to attend the Datavyu training workshop on Monday and had some problems with the installation. My computer is running Windows 8.1 x64 with 32- and 64- bit versions of Java 8 update 31 installed. I followed the instructions in the Datavyu user's guide to install QuickTime, including QuickTime for Java. I am able to open Datavyu but when I attempt to "add data," I get a pop-up message saying that "Quicktime's Java libraries are not found." Do you have suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

Thanks,

Scripting custom codes

$

Hello, I am trying to create a custom column where the value is dependent on multiple values from other columns. For example, I have a column called trials where there are codes for right and left object. I have another column called looking, which has direction code. I would like to copy the looking column (onsets and offsets) and change the direction code based off the right and left object. Essentially, I would like to make an if statement to change the looking codes. Thus far I have called all of the necessary columns and created a new columns with a object look code in a script. But am not sure how to copy the column or make the if statement.

I also wanted to create a new column which copies the codes in another column but breaks the cell into fourths. For example the first cell is 4 seconds long and I would like to create a new column with 1 second cells based on the onset and offset of the four second cell with the same codes.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you, Laura

Playback Issues on Mac

I am having trouble playing media files smoothly in datavyu. I switched to a Mac after having video playback issues on my PC. At first, playback on the Mac was great; however, it became choppy after a couple of months. I had our in-house tech support look at the computer, and we did not find any problems with the network or computer itself.

I am using datavyu version 1.3.4 on a Mac Mini (OS X El Capitan, version 10.11.14, 8 GB memory, 1600 MHz). The files are in .m4v format, and I play them using the quicktime plugin. The files play smoothly in VLC and quicktime but are choppy in datavyu.

Any advice for improving playback quality?

Thank you, Penina

Look coding break down

$

Hello, I am currently running an experiment where I code trials and looking during the trials. I want to break up the looking codes a little bit more based on an audio cue, which occurs in the trials. Since each trial is a set amount of time I know when the audio occurs and would like looking to match up to this (looking currently is based on the entire trials), however it would mean parsing the looking coding further in to milliseconds. I have a script that breaks my trials into a parsing that I want, but some looks span this preset break. For example I have one second region of interest and I look that is 2 seconds long. Is there anyway to expand the looking into more cells to create this based on this new trials' parsing?

I would be happy to provide more information if I had been unclear. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Supported Video Extensions

I'm trying to "Add Data" using a video with an .m4v extension. This opens fine in Quicktime, which leads me to believe that it should be supported by Datavyu (since the FAQ page says "Datavyu supports all video formats that Quicktime or VLC can play"). However, when I try to use the "Add Data" button in the controller, it gives me an error message that says "Could not open data source: Could not initialize class quicktime.io.QTFile".
